SpaceX has won the NASA’s contract to launch to large the mission of a large metallic asteroid from their Falcon Heavy rocket. NASA’s mission is called the Psyche asteroid mission and the total cost of the mission is $117.
The Psyche mission will launch in July 2022 from Launch Complex 39A at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Psyche asteroid is located between Mars and Jupiter and is primarily made of the nickel-iron core of an early planet that broke apart due to high-speed collision. Scientists believe that the study of the Psyche mission will help them to understand the formation of our solar system.
Falcon Heavy will launch @NASAPsyche! The mission, for which @NASA requires the highest level of launch vehicle reliability, will study a metal asteroid between Mars and Jupiter to help humanity better understand the formation of our solar system’s planets https://t.co/mvrgx6dvaW pic.twitter.com/FqMaRKscQ4
