Disney+ has been launched in India to select users for beta testing ahead of the official launch. The streaming service will go live on March 29.
“A limited release of the beta version of the Disney+ Hotstar app is currently being tested with a small number of consumers, in preparation for the full-fledged app launch on 29th March,” a Hotstar spokesperson said.
Disney+ will not be launched as a separate app but it will be clubbed with Hotstar. To recall, Disney also owns Hotstar. Before the launch, the logo of Hotstar has been changed to Disney+ Hotstar logo.
Within the app, Disney+ is avaialble as a separate category. It has various sub-categories such as “Disney”, “Pixar”, “Marvel”, “National Geography”, “Star Wars.” It also lists several Disney+ originals including, “The Mandalorian”, “Diary of a Future President”, “The World According to Jeff Goldblum”, documentary “One Day at Disney” and “High School Musical: The Musical – The Series.”
Hotstar was launched in 2015. Currently, it claims to have more than 350 Mn downloads and over 150 Mn monthly active users. It offers nearly 100K hours of drama and movies in 18 languages and coverage of every major global sporting event. Currently, Hotstar offers three subscription plans — a premium package at Rs 199 a month, a sports pack at Rs 299 a year and a Hotstar VIP feature for Rs. 365 a year.
