Walt Disney Studios will release the Pulitzer award-winning movie Hamilton on Disney+ On July 3. The movie was originally shot at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in June 2016.
The musical version of the movie will star Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.
Unlike other musical movies such as ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Cats’, Hamilton is a filmed version of the show recorded in June 2016. It will transport its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.
The show won the 2016 Pultizer and Grammy award for the best musical theater long with 11 Tonys awards. It has collected $650 million on Broadway and seen by over 2.6 million.
“I think it’s brilliant in these times to tell a story of people coming together against forces of adversity is quite relevant and actually quite important,” Bob Iger, Disney CEO, said.
