The Indian government banned a total of 59 Chinese mobile apps including many popular TikTok, UC Browser, and ShareIt. Now users won’t able to use those apps in their mobile devices.
Why government banned 59 Chinese mobile apps
The Indian government said these apps are threat to Indian sovereignty and the integrity of India. The government used power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act to block those apps int the country.
In a detailed press release, the government said, these 59 apps “are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.”
The ban will hugely impact TikTok India. According to a report from 2019, it had over 466 million users which was about 31% of total users, in India. TikTok is owned by the Chinese billion-dollar startup ByteDance. Recently TikTok is also caught spying iOS users due to a bug in iOS 14 beta. Later, the company admitted it and said it won’t repeat in the future.
