According to a report from The Information Facebook is developing its own operating system which could be an alternative to Google’s Android. The new OS will reduce the dependency on Android. Currently, Facebook’s hardware products including Oculus and Portal devices run on the modified versions of Android.
The development of Facebook OS is being led by Mark Lucovsky (an ex-Microsoft employee who co-developed the Windows NT operating system). He confirmed that the future products (Oculus, AR Glass, Portal, and more) of Facebook won’t need Google’s Android OS. It seems that Facebook wants to follow the footsteps of Apple who controls the entire ecosystem from designing the hardware to process using their own in-house chip and to run it with their own OS.
“We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us,” Facebook’s head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth, told The Information. “We don’t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that’s the case. And so we’re gonna do it ourselves.”
Facebook also tried to develop its own operating system in 2013 but it didn’t go well. People called it a forked version of Android.
