Microsoft‘s SwiftKey messaging app is adding a new Animoji-like feature called Puppets. The Puppets will allow users to create their own virtual character that matches their head movements and facial expressions. The new Puppets currently comes with five characters: Dinosaur, Panda, Cat, Owl, and Dog.

The Swiftkey’s Puppets feature doesn’t require a user’s smartphone to be equipped with a 3D depth camera instead it can even use the front-facing RGB camera.

Deepak Paramanand, a Product Manager at Microsoft stated: “We wanted to give SwiftKey fans a fun way to communicate with their loved ones beyond pre-defined GIFs and so we created Puppets, a group of cute and furry friends that people can control just by being themselves. Choose one of five animals, record a message of fewer than 30 seconds and share it via one of the many popular communication apps supported by Android devices. It’s a fun way to stay in touch.

How to use the feature

Choose any of the characters and start recording a message.
The feature will recognize the facial movement and expressions and will create an accurate animated animal copy it.

The new SwiftKey feature is available in beta form today at on Google Play for Android phones.

SwiftKey is one of the most popular messaging apps in the play store. It has already crossed the 300 million downloaded mark and is still counting.
