Nokia claimed that it has developed a tool that will let mobile operators move from 4G networks to 5G networks without replacing any hardware.
Nokia said, its tool is available immediately for radio access networks (RAN) in a million base stations, growing to 3.1 million by the end of 2020 and 5 million by the end of 2021.
Tommi Uitto, president of mobile networks at Nokia, said: “We already provide market-leading LTE radios to hundreds of customers around the world. This is an important solution because it will help our customers, quickly and efficiently upgrade their existing LTE radios so that they are 5G-ready, saving them time and money.”
Nokia claims that the upgrade can be applied via existing FDD (frequency-division duplex) spectrum bands of 4G and claimed that “upgrade 4G/LTE radios via a software update will significantly smooth out the deployment of 5G/NR (New Radio) FDD, avoiding costly and disruptive site visits.”
The company also unveils Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) that allows both 4G and 5G NR to share the same band.
