Whatsapp is a hub of fake news. Peoples receive and share lots of fake news via Whatsapp. From last some years, Whatsapp is working on to tackle fake news. Reports are that chat messenger Whatsapp is testing a “reverse image search” feature to battle fake news. The new feature would allow a user to quickly verify the legitimacy of images they have received on WhatsApp by checking if they had ever appeared on the web before.

The report notes that the chat app will use Google APIs to compare the selected image with similar pictures, and will show the result in a browser. As shown in the screenshots below, the app will upload the image to Google’s image search – as WhatsApp can’t read the encrypted content in the chat – to compare it with other images.

“If you choose to search an image, WhatsApp will alert you that it will be uploaded to Google after which WhatsApp will open the browser to show the results,” WABetaInfo reported on Friday. The feature would help users understand if the news is real or fake.

The feature is limited to Android 4.1 or newer version.
